You bought a bag of a fruit that you've never tried before. The fruit is 99% water by weight. If you let them dehydrate until they are 98% water, how much will the bag of fruit then weigh?

This is either a trick question, or an algebra problem.

w = original weight of fruit
k = non water weight of fruit

w = .99w + k
k = w - .99w

j = new fruit weight (98% water)

j = .98j + k

substitute w - .99w for k

j = .98j + (w - .99w)

.02j = w - .99w

j = (w - .99w)/.02

Yeah, I had the same thought when I first worked it out.

Then I reasoned it like this:

At 99% water, the ratio of the weights is 99:1.
At 98% water, the ratio of the weights is 49:1.

That made the answer sound obvious.
