So, I've been playing this, instead of trying out DF as I promised Skoormit... but this is addictive as hell.

Especially considering the fact that you can make your own mods for the game AND it's not tough to build your own mods.
It's in alpha, but surprisingly ... it's extremely playable.

$30 is a bit expensive for an alpha/indie title, but having tried it out I feel it's worth it.
Quote:

In its fiction, RimWorld draws a lot from Firefly. This is where it gets its subtle Western vibe - frontier living, an arid environment, sparse law enforcement, and the constant threat of outlaws. We're also heavily inspired by science fiction novels like Dune and Alastair Reynolds' Revelation Space series (which both Alistair Lindsay and I are huge fans of). The Warhammer 40,000 universe also forms part of our inspiration.

In terms of game design, the game draws most from the 800-pound gorilla of the simulation genre, Dwarf Fortress. We also take ideas from indie hits like FTL (our semi-random event format) and Prison Architect (its way of presenting a complex world in a comprehensible, interactive way). And, there are many others.

/whisper If anyone wants to try it out, I can share my 4 remaining downloads of alpha 4f.
I'm reasonably confident that you'll end up purchasing the game for the next alpha version Very Happy.

I know my minefields.. but I'm a chaff sweeper.
I used to curse when I got stuck in traffic... till I realised I AM traffic.

Yes, Rimworld is lots of fun! Keep in mind that it is meant to be a story-driven game, where worse things happen to you based on how well you are doing and how much time has passed.

Another great one to watch is http://www.factorio.com (also in Alpha), which will be going multiplayer 'soon'.

And then there's http://gnomoria.com (also in Alpha), which is kind of a much more simple Dwarf Fortress with good graphics.

If you want a strange FPS (kinda), try 3089 http://3089game.wordpress.com (also on Steam)
