Banished - City builder game with a twist |

It's a game where you start off with a few people who have been banished and have to struggle against nature (which entails starvation/freezing) while making sure your town doesn't die of old age at the same time.
I want to explain it more in detail, but words won't do it justice... and it's not the standard lazy option that non-articulate people use. You really have to see the pics (and perhaps any youtube vid).
I've been playing this game since last weekend and it's something that's taken over all my Stars! time .. and more.
My current town with after 100 years.

Check out of one the professional towns with 4000 pop!

Note that getting to 300/600/900 pop are the 3 stages that the game has 'achievement targets' for.
Getting to 4000 is insane.
Another beautifully done town

Haven't really played SimCity series.
However, comparing it to Caesar 3, it definitely passes the test.
Check this 2min video out.

To quote @MrsCrimson who very eloquently answered this point
Quote:
Keep in mind it's total sandbox/survival city building - there's no structured campaign mission goals, no military, no tech-trees or different "ages" to unlock. The challenge is about design/terrain, food, Disasters if you want them, and managing the town so it doesn't collapse into a ruinous spiraling cycle. )

In fact, that is exactly the gist of what I was about to post. I downloaded Banished and played it for several hours today. It is well done. It is fun. I will probably get way more than twenty bucks worth of enjoyment out of it.
And the entire time I am playing Banished I feel like I am playing a kindergarten version of Dwarf Fortress. It's like checkers to chess. Like Spaceward Ho! to Stars! Like CivI to CivIV.
If you have played DF, imagine a nice pretty graphical interface. Also, no goblins. Also, no individuality among your population: they are entirely interchangeable; no difference in skills, demeanor, etc. Also, no z-levels. It's all on the surface. But it is essentially the same game: you decide what needs to be done, and your populace does it. Eventually.
If you have not played DF, my advice is to turn around and walk the other way, quickly. If you are like me (and chances are, you are), DF may consume you. DF has more tactical and strategic depth (pun!) than perhaps any other game you will ever play. Certainly more than any other RTS. Don't dip your toe into DF unless you are prepared for a long and complete plunge.
What we need's a few good taters.Report message to a moderator

DAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMN... I continued reading.
The next sentence was a challenge, I couldn't refuse. It made me go download the game.
I installed it...
and tried playing it....
without reading any help pages / LP vids.
As can be expected, I'm totally in the woods now.
I'm going to try this out tmrw.

And that's all before following the inevitable urge to crack open the raws and start modding the game to your whims...

I just saw that banished is just $4.99 on gog.com
I also read the developers web page and he is working on an update/new version that will run on linux/mac/steam/windows.
