The location hosting the AutoHost server had a router problem. No one (including me) could access the server for 2 hours. All games are on hold, game hosts can take their games off of hold when they choose to.

Thank you for your patience.

Yes, you can indeed!

Upload away, my friend! Your enemies are waiting.... Wink

Actually, I have a HOLD question too.... is there any way (and I think the answer is NO) that you can take the game off HOLD without generating another year?

As I said, I reckon the answer is NO, but it'd be cool if you could! Cool

The answer is "yes, but ..." Wink

When a game generates let's say at 8am and is put on hold at 5am you can take it off hold any time before 8am without the game genning another year right away. However if you take it off hold at 9am it will see it is already past gen time and gen immediately ...

Well, that's the *theory* ... but it's tricky and sometimes that doesn't always seem to be true. I think most hosts will rather delay the game to make sure all turns are in before taking the game off hold (I always do). Regens are a hosts worst nightmare. Evil or Very Mad

Grrh!

Send host and other players yesterday evening a mail about autohost being down and me being unable to upload. I decided sometime, that it's not worth missing further sleep waiting for autohost. This morning i saw that a gen was done.

I guess that you can't stop it generating whilst the servers are out of action...

I'm hoping it'll help my players get their arses into gear in future... Wink

I've had that happen to me a couple of times.

A word to hosts:
Please, when a game is on hold do NOT let the game gen without sending mail to all active players, even if you have not received a mail like Carns, giving them a reasonable timeframe before the game will come off of hold and gen. Reasonable timeframe will differ depending on how many different timezones your players inhabit so that all will have the opportunity to see your mail and submit a turn.

Guess I should add some code to check if AH can ping things on the Internet, and auto pause/shutdown if it can't.

Ping is a very basic protocol... it would be wiser to try some more complex type query... perhaps a nameservice lookup... for some site which is *always* up... I have had my server able to ping but not receive on more than a few occasions.

Even though the probability of the one of the main dns servers being down is very very very low..., I suggest quering 2 to 3 different servers...every hour or every two hours.....just to be extremely sure....Smile

Out of interest, has anybody got a log of how many times the Autohost servers have been down over the last 12 months... and for how long?

Just personal curiosity! Smile
