This is David of the Quacks. I am posting info related to Spartins diplomatic relations with me before his leaving.

We wish to resolve how to handle him dropping, whether I am friend for a few turns or set to neutral (if I am not attacking him). I am suggesting we wait to hear from him for a day if possible.

A few turns back, Spartins were missing many turns and we assumed he had dropped out. Trog took a colony of his. Spartins suddenly reappeared and thought he was backstabbed.

It was explained that we thought he dropped and an arrangement was made where Trog gave back the colony and transfered over 29 smart bombers to Spartins and the turn after Spartin would make Trog friend again.

Spartins screwed up the next turn and ended up accidently destroying the smart bombers before they could transfer and fluke wiped out 200,000+ colonists in 2 of Trog's large freighters plus one of Trog's gated starbases.

Trog was mad at first but the matter was negotiated out so we would all stay friends. Here is Spartins email message on the matter:

1)

I screwed up. sorry. Been given bombers is sure preferable to just blow
them up. When I saw this bomber fleet at my HW I panicked and set Trogs
to enemy just to be sure. I didn´t think that battle preceedes fleet
transfer. About that starbase: even more Sorry! These ships were there
merely for penscan duty, and when I took this "wise diplomatic
precaution" I forgot about them. I am willing to compensate for this.
What about Trogs been granted access to unlimited mass stargates at
Raisin, Pearl and Gordon?

2)

MEEP.. MEEP.. MEEP.. 31 Budgie Jihad cruisers, 37 Beam cruisers and
auxilliary ships were sighted at Gordon by our heroic forces which were
blown to dust when they desperately and foolishly tried to engage the
enemy.

It must read "Catnip" not "Gordon". Just where do I have my thoughts?
Maybe at the preparation for the math exam? Crap...

Here is a copy of some previous communications from the host:

Actually, I intend to set him to neutral status.

I said before that if I was going to put him on AI control (which I won't) then I would leave him on friend status for 5 turns so you didn't risk being attacked by a hostile AI without warning. As I am putting him on strictly defensive orders, then there is no reason to do this.

It would be unfair to the other players for me to leave you indefinate access to defended stargates..... I could do it, but I am certain that other players would complain (rightly), and point out his last public message to you wasn't exactly friendly.....

I've appended my previous messages to the bottom of this message.

If you think I've misinterpreted any part of our previous conversation, please mail me again.

Hi,

Your last post did not mention the diplomatic
relations situation. Do I still get to use his gates?
In the previous discussion it was said so, to be fair
to everyone, perhaps that should be clarified.

Hmmm, I've taken a look, and apparently AI control is not only a major timewaster for Ron (the autohost guy) to switch on, but it is also incompetent (i.e. does not move fleets, deletes ship designs, etc etc)

With this in mind, I would just set the player to inactive, unless I thought there was a good chance of finding a replacement (in this case the chances are very poor.)

*IF* the players didn't mind, I'd like to open up his game file and fill up his build queues with orders to build the biggest starbases and biggest defense fleets that they can, so the inactive race is not such an easy target (it'd still be much easier to conquer than if the race was still controlled...) But I expect I'd probably get shouted down on *that* little idea by some of the noisier players.

With the amount of time that has passed since his last
turn and email, I am concerned. I am asking ahead of
time so I can organise myself to respond to what the
conditions will be in case he is no show.

"his race appears to be recovering from his early
losses."

Yes, and he stands to gain some more planets soon.
But he may have just been playing till he got the
satisfaction of revenge, a little Budgie bombing
before giving up.

It was hard to even get him to ask for techs, when I
was offering whatever he wanted for free.

So what do people think?

I'd like to make it clear I originaly suggested leaving the diplomatic status on friend (for 5 turns) becuase the end diplomatic status was going to be an ACTIVE enemy.

But AI control has been shown to be counter-productive, so this will not be done, therefore there is no need to give the neigbouring players a 'warm up' time to prepare defenses, as they are not going to be attacked...

I don't want a situation where all of a players stars go by default to their 'friends' when they drop. By leaving players on friend status this gives them a free hand to bomb and pop-drop, where any other player would first have to combat fleets.

Maybe I am being a too interactive host...

The problem with what I see the host suggesting is it can't be done in a fair way when the next guy drops.

Rather than drop he can just tell the host 'I am going to miss the next 5 turns but am still playing', or submit turns without doing anything.

I had understood Spartins to remain friend for a few turns after leaving (because I had not heard after he would end up neutral), so my forces are arranged and mixed for that. Otherwise I would have forces arranged to deal with his minefields, etc.

Strange as it may seem, Spartins planets do me little good, I am not eager to take them over. They are good greens for others which makes them similar to reds for me. Having planets that others want is a liabillity for me right now.

I have my hands full with the battle of the birds.

Spartins settled this particular instance, by changing their player relations before they actually dropped (in fact, before we even started this discussion) Very Happy

In as far as how another player could 'manipulate' this process and 'drop' without dropping, here is my response:

1) If a player does not submit for 5 turns, then I will consider them to have dropped.

2) If a player is clearly making token uploads, purely for another races benefit, then I would consider that abuse. (Ever hear about 'twin race' designs where a HE builds up and a HP takes over?) I will not be impressed if I see races 'commiting suicide' Mad

Listen up players: If you want to drop, drop. If you are going to keep playing then **KEEP PLAYING**. Rolling Eyes There is no middle ground here as far as I am concerned. Twisted Evil
