Excluding the obvious (but time consuming) option of asking Ron directly for access to the backups....

A) How many years of backup does auto-host keep for each game?
B) Is there an appetite for an easy way to access the backups for a host?

Having had questions as both a host and a player I wonder if a zip file download of the game backups from the host utility would be a sane option.

EDIT - I should clarify that the time consuming is for Ron.... i.e. lots of people asking him for downloads....

Ten years.

Which is why it's a good idea to have the turns emailed to a new gmail id (just for that game).. Smile
Release the game files to anyone who wants to look at them, once the game is over.

Edit - You would have players who won't like to reveal their race designs/strategies to everyone (apart from the host), so you would need to ask if everyone is ok with it or tell them not to join the game.

And I have that - I just wonder whether a zip file of annual directories would be a sane thing to keep. Certainly on unix it's trivial to add files to an archive, I imagine the same to be possible on windows - and I don't think that a full host backup would take *too* much room in todays land of infinite storage (heck, even a dropbox update might be an interesting option...)

It used to be 5, but I changed it to 50, I believe.

Helped track down one or more Stars bugs
I don't really find backups of just the .M file very useful. I like to have the .H file also for the year I'm looking at.

For games I host, the Basic series, I'm emailed every turn for every player and I have a backup directory with a sub-directory for every turn (2400 to 2599) with every turns .M & .H file in it.

P.S. Nmid, don't ask, the game info in NOT available to anyone without the OK of all the players in the game

Awesome.
I thought you increased it to 10, up from 5, when we were talking about the turn backups of Stone Age Slog.

Heh.

Just had another thought (as I do) whilst dumping a load of homeless files from email..

On the host utility there is a space for the email address of each player, which accepts two addresses happily.

This means I get a bundle of emails each time the turn gens, and all of the files have basically the same name.
Given the ability of mail clients to automatically push incoming attachments to various file systems (gmail on chrome for instance can happily push to dropbox) would it be possible to have a "game backup" email address field to which a zip file of all m files would be sent each year "<gamename>.<year>.zip"

Easy to automatically manage the files and backups at that point.

PS - Ron, not really trying to make extra work for you Wink The current system works, but I'm inherently lazy...

Thread at ahf: Idea for a new utility

The utility at the Stars Wiki: Stars! Backup

I use it as a standard for all games I host. Once set up, it backups the whole game without any more work than to download the emails from time to time... saving into the right directory and so on all runs automatically.

I have no Windows PCs, it might work under unix, but server side is always nice (simplifies the emails lists as well).

I could just run fetchmail I suppose, but I've not ben setting up whole accounts by default. I'll make a stars account and test.

I'm also probably going to release a VM image with a few 'toys'...

I updated Micha's tool a bit:
http://starsautohost.org/sahforum2/index.php?t=msg&th=50 3&goto=57752&rid=775#msg_57752

Still needs Windows, though, but that's true for Stars, too.

I don't have any windows PCs (well, Ok, I have access to a work laptop, but it doesn't run Stars!)

I use wine (on a VPS, connecting with NX)
I use DOSbox on Android, with a hacked 3.11

I'm not a normal case, I know that, but my 'Available' machine is a VPS hosted in a different country. And that will never run an OS from redmond...
