This is going to be a classic game with only the most common restrictions. Altum Silentium is the game of no communication between players. No diplomacy! No alliances! No trade! Everyone plays on its own!
Players of all skill levels are invited to take part in. However, in order to make the game competitive I am going to use handicaps. There will be 3 classes of players, i.e. (i) total beginners (ii) less experienced players (iii) more experienced players. Total beginners are considered players who played less than 3 games vs humans. Who should be considered as the more experienced player depends on the host, which makes the decision based on the player’s preferences (so If you want to join, pls let me know how I should rank you, i.e. as the less or more experienced player). More experienced players will leave 50 RW points set to defences. Less experienced players leave 10 RW points to defences. Total beginners can spend all RW points as they prefer.
Conditions of the game:
- Medium
- Sparse (which means 216 planets)
- Distant
- AccBBS
- No random events
- No PPS
Restrictions as to races:
- CA as PRT is banned (except for total beginners who are allowed to take CA)
- Joat cannot take NAS (total beginners are allowed to take Joat with NAS)
Other restrictions:
- Standard cheats disclaimer (i.e. only split-fleet-dodge, chaff, mergers after gating are allowed)
- No pre-game alliances
- Players must set the others to “enemy” and battle orders to attack everyone
Winning conditions:
- One winner only
- Winner is declared in unanimous voting of the other active players
Turn generation schedule:
- 2401 -2415 -> M-T-W-T-F-S-S at 3 GMT
- 2416 - 2430 -> M-T-W-T-F-Sat at 3 GMT
- after 2430 possible slower pace (M-W-F-Sat) on player’s request
- Major holidays are free from generations
- The game is put on hold if the player missed 3 turns in a row in order to find the replacement
There will be 6 – 8 players. Host (me) plays. Per, do you agree to check the races and to generate the game?
The game will be put at SAH.
I want to begin ASAP.

paul_ik wrote on Sun, 25 April 2010 03:23 | The rules are simple and cool and the game will probably not demand too much time (no exhaustive alliance discussions). So I will probably take part.
However I'm concerned about allowing some players taking CA. I haven't played against CA and can't estimate how strong CA race is, but why allowing any race (or race + LRT combination) if it's almost always banned. Personally I don't want to play this kind of race. Neither I want to challenge this race. RW points is what gives beginners advantage, and that should be enough. This is my opinion of a beginner player, but probably it makes some sense

You are quite correct... CA is substantially unbalanced. Perhaps it wouldn't be too unfair in the hands of a good player who hasn't yet played against humans, but how about in the hands of a player that's already played up to four games? Four games is a fair bit of experience (four years experience, perhaps, at the rate Stars games progress...)
I'm not a beginner... But if I took a CA into a no-diplomacy game, I'd be pretty disappointed if I lost.
Looks like a nice, simple, fast game to join. I wish my other games were a few weeks closer to finished

In Antagonism, we had 2 beginners. Despite of handicaps for experienced players, they dropped very early. One dropped without a single shot. He played IS. The second played JoaT with NAS. He lasted a bit longer.
I assume this was due to not good enough race designs and improper pop management. Soon, they found out that they are not competitive in respect of economy.
My response is to allow beginners to take CA and JoaT. These races are the strongest in respect of economy. Even in hands of beginners, CA or JoaT should be competitive.
From my experience results, that handicap for more experience players seems to be not enough to give beginners even chances. Thus, I allowed CA and JoaT fo beginners. I recommend beginners taking one of them.
Dogthinkers might be right as to definition of beginner. I hesitated how many games needs a player to get experienced. Perhaps 3 maybe 2 are enough, it is hard to assess.

Hi,
If you still have a spot, I would like to join. I played STARS years ago in several games (over 30) against humans. 100 or more again the AI.
I just finished my first game, since the 90s, against 4 other players and am looking forward to more.

After only a week, with ManicLurch we have 8 players which means the game is full.
ManicLurch is considered as more experienced player.
The Deadline is 2 May 2010 at 6:00 p.m. GMT.
Please, send races to perrindom (at) comxnet (dot) dk. Do not forget about PW.
The game will be generated ASAP and sent to Ron.

IMO your help for beginners in respect of race designs would be welcomed. Per, feel free to suggest beginners modifications making them competitive.

The game is full already. It is dedicated for only 8 players. And I am not going to extend it. I am sure soon there will be a new game announced here. Perhaps this will be a game dedicated for beginners.
The deadline for sending races is today. So there is not much time to prepare it if you are a beginner.
All we can do is to take you as substitute player, in case someone would not send his race to Per today. I cannot promiss you the participation, but who knows, maybe someone will give up. Please, pick up CA as PRT!
