Fledging Admirals II
This is the 2nd game of the Fledging Admirals serial. The setup is quite similar to Fledging Admirals I.
It's a pretty straight short game which is intended to lure back oldtimers (considering themselves beginner to lower intermediate) and to bring in new players. If a friend told you about the game and you are keen on playing but lack a serial code, there are unique serial numbers available from Ron who is also running autohost, look in the following thread: Getting serial numbers.
To make the battleground even, players with some pbem-Stars experience will have to leave some leftover points in the race wizard (see restrictions).
Host is not playing and feel free to ask when you feel unsure about the conditions, Stars-version, abbreviations etc.
Game Info
Players: 6 - 9
Skill level: beginner - lower intermediate
Ranked: No
Version: 2.6 J rc4, 2.7 J rc3 (German)
Autohost: Yes
Turn generation: 5 turns a week (Tuesday-Saturday) up to year 2430, then 3 turns/week (Tue-Thur-Sat) as soon as requested by at least one player. Weekends and holidays off. If you need a pause, just ask the host.
Host is playing: No
Universe size: Small Packed, Distant Starting Positions
Starting conditions: ACC BBS, Public Player Score
Victory conditions: Last Man/Last Team standing or consensus. Winning team mustn't exceed 2 players.
Game Rules
1) No pregame alliances which means that players should not get in contact before the game starts to optimize their race designs for a later alliance.
2) No cheats (except chaff and split-fleet dodge), for more info see the thread: Known Bugs (JRC3) - Player Exploitable Bugs / "Features" (or ask the host when in doubt)
3) PRT-restrictions for beginners (PRT = Primary Racial Trait)
* JOAT mustn't take NAS
* AR banned
* PP banned
4) Rusty oldtimers, advanced beginners, lower intermediate: Players which have already played Stars pbem games vs humans will have disadvantages by leaving leftover points in the race wizard:
* SD banned
* JOAT: either 150 leftover points or "no NAS" + "no OBRM"
* AR: 0 leftover points
* all other PRTs: 100 leftover points
Leftover points can be spent as you like except on mineral concentration.
If in doubt where to sort yourself in (like having played only 1 pbem-game and having found yourself defeated as the first player), send me an email and ask.
Special Rules
* Germ starting concentration will be between 30 and 60.
* Inactivity: Players which have missed 3 turns will be set to inactive. I'll look for replacements if appropriate but the game won't stop.
* Before you ally with more than 1 player, all involved parties (existing ally and possible new ally) must get informed about each other. A simple message will do like "By the way, before we finally ally up, I am also allied with player 5, the Tronks." and vice versa to your existing ally.
If you are interested, please send to me altruist (at) arglos (dot) net :
* the race file
* the password
* your desired email address
* a short note about your Stars-experience
I'll keep this post updated to display the players taking part.
Deadline: Friday, 23rd February
Until then I want to have all the race files and over the weekend I'll set up the game and send the files to Ron.
Players so far (players in green sent in their race-file):
1) alric
2) Deuce
3) Paul
4) Martin
5) Dirk
6) Sumo_Sniper
7) wchart
8) maxfra (no race-file)
9) regiss
It's Friday, 23rd February, one player maxfra hasn't sent in a race-file, all other 8 players are in. Game will be set up and sent to Ron over the weekend.
A note about game length and what you might have to expect:
With the above turn generation and assuming the game will last for about 60 turns, the game will be played over a period of around 16 weeks (about 4 month). While this is rather short for a Stars-game, I want to remind everybody, it is not wise to sign up for the game when you already know that eg in 2 month you will be away/without internet connection for several weeks.
Small packed games with 6-9 players tend to be very fast paced. Thus you better don't expect a long peaceful development but skirmishes along your frontiers and somebody trying to invade your colonies perhaps as early as in the 10th and first fleets with destroyers in the 20ies. Early scouting is important not only to know your possible enemies but also to find a suitable ally. It's not at all like playing against the AIs, humans are tricky, nasty and look out for your weak spots (but then again, this humans are only beginners in nastiness).
Don't despair when you get wiped out. Usually you learn more from loosing a game than from winning... and the advantage of a short game: you can apply your newly gained knowledge soon in the next game and kick some admiral's ass.
Since this game is mainly for new players, the host will describe in detail how to use the autohost interface to upload/download turns and about every 5 turns an email will be sent around with some tips and hints. If you are interested to read some very helpful articles:

Regards,
Altruist

You are already playing in Fleging Admirals I (which I am hosting) and Babylon (in which I am playing); both games haven't really started yet. Adding a 3rd game wouldn't be wise, either you would get into RL-problems or lacking the time for Stars... the latter is, of course, inacceptable.

Welcome as fledging admirals *grin
Updated the first post and included you both as players.
Reurning newbie... well, you will need to specify this a bit more when you send me your race file therefore I can decide where to sort you in. Same for alric.
One note about CAs since I my answere was perhaps a bit short:
While CAs are strong, don't overestimate them in a small universe with 6-9 players. In such a setting the tactical advantages of the other PRTs do count a lot. One of the reasons I banned for example SD for non-beginners because I feared that beginners have a just too hard time vs the SD's minefields.

I'd stick myself in section 4 area too:
4) Rusty oldtimers, advanced beginners, lower intermediate

I fall under advanced beginners category. I've played 3 games before, however, I dropped out of all three due to commitments... Now I'm finally out of all of them, so I can keep this up.
Sending you the race file.
|
Fine.
We have 6 players now, of which 3 have sent in their race file (see also first updated post).
I'll wait for a 7th player, then I'll set a deadline until all race files must be in. Other players can still join if they are fast enough with sending in their race file... up to a max of 9 players altogether.

Well, things seem to speed up.
There are now 7 player of which 5 have already sent in their race file.
Missing race files from:
alric
Martin
Sumo_Sniper (seems to be the wrong PRT and I've got no email-address yet)
The game was announced as taking part with a minimum of 6 players, a maximum of 9. Now we have 7 players. Enough to start soon and to set a deadline:
Friday, 23rd February
Until then I want to have all the race files and over the weekend I'll set up the game and send the files to Ron. Until that deadline 2 more players can join when they manage to send in their race file in time.

Hi Maxfra,
and welcome to the game.
maxfra wrote on Mon, 19 February 2007 16:45 | In that case, since the game is for beginners/itermediate and I've played many games...is there some restriction I should follow (for expl. a race instead of another...)
|
Since you are definetyl no beginner, the following part of the rules apply to you:
4) Rusty oldtimers, advanced beginners, lower intermediate: Players which have already played Stars pbem games vs humans will have disadvantages by leaving leftover points in the race wizard:
* SD banned
* JOAT: either 150 leftover points or "no NAS" + "no OBRM"
* AR: 0 leftover points
* all other PRTs: 100 leftover points
Leftover points can be spent as you like except on mineral concentration.
Or would you judge yourself beyond intermediate?
Advanced intermediate and above, I am sorry, shouldn't take part in the Fledging Admirals serial. There are no reasonable restrictions to bridge that gap between newbie and advanced intermediate.

I listed you as player 9) in the first post. So, yes, you are in.
Except your skill-level is too high. Thus I asked you wether you would judge yourself beyond intermediate?
Unfortunately you haven't answered yet.
I've just seen that you are new to autohost: so let me rephrase it. If you would judge yourself quite a crack at Stars or of advanced skill, this game is not suited for you. As a matter of fact, you would rather spoil the game for the other players because they are beginner to intermediate skill.
In case you haven't got a clue what I am talking about or you can't judge your skill at Stars... well, that somehow qualifies you for the game and you are in.

Today is 23rd Feb, deadline for players who want to take part in Fledging Admirals II.
I've received race-files from 8 players. Maxfra, sorry but you are out: neither did I receive a race-file nor any response.
I'll set up the game today and the game files will be sent to Ron today or over the weekend.
Have fun.
