We can see 'military' Rank (Civilian, Crewman and so on, details here) on the left of each user's post. What about to show their Ranking (Beginner, Advanced Beginner and so on, details here) also? Is it technically possible?
Usualy, when you reading new game promotion, you can see smth like this: Game for Beginners (like not more than X games againist peoples), Intermidiate, Advance and so on ... but this is not clear enough. I guess if player lost for example 10 games in raw he can't say he bacome intemidiate just because he play already 10 games. In case of all players on forum have thair Ranking you could clearly specify that. And also in that case everyone could cleary understand own level.

Comments?

PS: I'm not ranked yet, but going to try later on ...

It is a possibility, it depends upon another table defined for use in fudforum, we are working on an upgrade to new version of FUDForum right now, perhaps as more data is collected in the ranking forum we will see a need to move the info to somewhere more apparent.

I know that thread is covered by dust, but if ranking will be implemented one day it could simply use the second set of the shoulder straps with the same ranks, but in different color. It looks like current ranks are not really war ranks, they are mostly sciences ranks, since posting here is a sort of game science and only real game rank is a rank earned from battles (wins and/or looses).

For example military warrant officer and sciences warrant officer. Full set could be found here.
I guess it could be really honorable to get a good war rank (but I'll have a pretty low actually). Smile

Another crazy idea is to use ranking system, where player growth or fall depends of the enemys (of their current rating) he has and won/lost. In that system if a beginner can won a game against pro with the really high rank he will gain rank faster then if he won another beginner. And if a pro lost a game against beginner he will loose his rank faster then if he lost it against another pro.

I guess why they go for that is that it's simple and relatively accurate.
Let's see.. If I try to rate games, I'll rate multi's as well as duels.

For games, number of players would decide the game value.
10 player games would be worth 10 points.
Irrespective of player rating?
Points will be given to the winner or the top 3 players (50%-30%-20%)?
Even so, a person who looses would get to learn, wont they?

From my experience in duels, I've played someone who has never played a human before (I didn't know when I started playing... so I didn't register the game as a win.)
In other duels, I have no idea how good the other player is, so I have no idea how to rate those duels.

Also if I play against the same person twice, how will that be counted?
Player A defeats player B and gets a point
Player A plays again against player B, does he get another point?

I thought that only 1 win per opponent should be registered but then, that would mean the winner of a duel, wouldn't be interested in playing again, as he won't get any points.

If there is no such limitation, then Player A will keep playing against player B and stack up 5 wins.. which isn't a correct view of things.

Perhaps a game should have a play value and an additional value for player rating.

Game value = 1 point
Player value =
1 point for unrated or beginner
3 points for intermediate
5 points for expert
Points will be given for the difference between the 2 player.
(unrated vs expert. Unrated wins, gets 1+4 points. Expert wins, he gets only 1 point).
Loosing will mean a -1 point.
(To make it further exact, an keeping a track of your losses separately will give you your maximum rating that tells you your total experience and a adjusted rating (counting your losses) will give you your current status.

Formula = Game Value + max Positive integer(1,His value - My value)
(Not sure if I wrote that right Confused )
Thus, if I ever get to play Micha/Per/Orange/bystander (Razz),
Being a beginner, I'll be worth 1 point, they are worth 5.
If I win, I get 1+max N(1,5-1) = 1+4 = 5. (Formula)
If I loose, I get -1. (standard loss value)
If they win, they get 1+(1-5)=1+ N(1,-4)= 1+1 = 2 (Formula)
If they loose, they get -1. (standard loss value)

Unrated players = 1 point for a win, 0 for a loss.
(Giving them a free 1st game after which they get rated as Stage 1)
Rated players (upto 3 levels.. or can be increased )
Stage 1 = 1 point, -1 for a loss
Stage 2 = 3 point, -1 for a loss
Stage 3 = 5 point, -1 for a loss

Hell, I think I lost myself somewhere, meh.

Which explains why people go for "how many games played" as a way to rank players.

Yes, it's more complex to calculate, but it shouldn't be calculated manually. Once implemented a good rating system would be easy to use and will give more real value.
Just for example check this one.
